Award for Excellence in History Teaching

 

The History Teachers’ Association of NSW (HTANSW) is delighted to call for nominations for an outstanding History teacher in NSW. 

 

There are two categories: 

  • Excellence in History Teaching (Early Career). These teachers will have been teaching between 1 - 5 years
  • Excellence in History Teaching. These teachers will have been teaching for more than 5 years.
     

The winners will be presented with the award at an event early in 2027, and may be invited to contribute to an HTANSW professional learning event (to be negotiated).

 

Eligibility: 

  • This is a peer nominated award which is judged against criteria.
  • The teacher may be employed in a primary or secondary school setting, in a Government, Independent or Catholic school in New South Wales.
  • They can be employed on a temporary, casual, part-time or permanent basis. They may be primary or secondary teachers.
  • They must be a resident of NSW.
  • Principals must be made aware that teachers are being nominated and may be contacted as a referee.
     

The nominee should demonstrate a range of qualities from the following list, however not all qualities need to be addressed. 

  • Energy and passion for the teaching of History: Shows a deep enthusiasm for the teaching of History and is able to communicate that to students and colleagues
  • Commitment to professional learning in History: Undertakes relevant professional learning appropriate to their school context
  • Engagement with and promotion of History beyond the classroom: Promotes the study of History through activities, and engages with colleagues beyond the school context
  • Commitment to inclusive and innovative educational practices: Adapts classroom practice to the learning needs of their students in an engaging and inclusive way
     

You will need to select and address THREE criteria only

 

Selection:

Nominations will be considered by a panel from the HTANSW Committee comprised of representatives from Government, Independent and Catholic schools across NSW. The committee will review all nominations and put forward a candidate based on merit. If no candidate is selected from the nominated group, the award will not be presented in that year. All decisions by the panel are final.
