An Overview of History Education in Australia (2026)

The History Teachers' Association of New South Wales, with the support of the Australian Historical Association, has conducted some general research about History education in Australia. Using the 2006 report 'An Overview of the Teaching and Learning of Australian History in Schools' produced by Tony Taylor and Anna Clark as a starting point, this new overview published in July 2026 presents a brief, descriptive comparison of the place of History in all Australian states and territories with a broad focus on the period 2006-2026. It presents a brief introduction to the curriculum (K-12), senior history enrolments and senior assessment in the states and territories and primarily aims to be informative, rather than analytical or diagnostic. The overview is freely available.
