History Education Research Report: Research Assistant
In 2025, HTANSW will begin a research project into the state of history education in Australian secondary schools. This project will produce a publicly available report that will provide high-level insights and commentary on the place of history in Australian secondary curriculum documents. The project aims to provide an update to the 2006 report developed by Tony Taylor and Anna Clark ('An overview of the teaching and learning of Australian history in schools') produced in 2006 for the Australian History Summit convened by then-Prime Minister John Howard. It will provide insights into the curriculum requirements for history in all major Australian states and territories and include some data (where available) on the number of students electing to take history courses in senior school. HTANSW aims to publish this report in early 2026 to mark 20 years since the release of the Taylor and Clark report with an anticipation that this will contribute broad longitudinal insights into the state of history education across two decades.
