The immediate appeal of this book will be visual. It has excellent coloured images; many are better than those you may have taken yourself at the sites. However its real value is its approach to the ‘sources’. While the study ‘notes’ may not suit our syllabus, the process of deconstructing images, illustrated throughout, will be useful for students who are learning how to see, examine and deconstruct visual sources.

There are sections on the domus, the villa, mosaics and frescos from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Inevitably there is more material from Pompeii. One notable feature is its examination of a number of well known houses; it locates equally well known frecos, scuplture and mosaics in those houses. Used in conjunction with Dr Penelope Allison’s work on artifact assemblages this could be very illuminating for your students.
